π UPDATE -- Raising Brows: Improving Mountain Brow Boulevard & Concession Street (Phase 2)
π - UPDATE FROM COUNCILLOR TOM JACKSON
I have driven and actually walked the new, now finished Phase 2 of the Mountain Brow Boulevard/Concession Street Reconstruction and Multi-Use Path.
On behalf of my East Mountain Community and the many volunteers who make up my East Mountain Citizens Committee (EMCC) and my Ward 6 Office, I would like to formally thank Construction Manager English, Special Project Manager McShane, and Project Manager Cowperthwaite at the City of Hamilton for the outstanding and sensational job. My Ward 6 Office received praise, accolades, and sincere appreciation from taxpayers who are genuinely impressed with this project and its true legacy (along with Phase 1 that opened in 2017) and are proud of their municipal government. In addition, extras such as the interspersed parapet walls, the stamped concrete noise wall around the Kenilworth Circle, the solar panel lights, and the decorative iron eagle black fencing have added a special touch.
Moreover, I'd like to acknowledge the care and attention by Construction Manager English, Special Project Manager McShane, and Project Manager Cowperthwaite to the households that were most impacted, endured the greatest physical changes, and disruption to their lives over the last 12 months. They know that their opinions mattered and were addressed to the best of their collective abilities!
Even the redesigned traffic circle and installation of new traffic lights is gaining greater acceptance by traveling motorists, with the intended traffic calming being realized especially with pedestrians, cyclists, and scooters now legally using the multi-use path as a connector, both recreationally and commuter-wise.
Thank you as well to all City staff involved in this project (from Engineering Design to Traffic Operations to Landscapes Architects Master Trails Plan) for your amazing, talented work and contribution to this legacy project, from the planning stages to completion. Without your skilled input and planning, the final product would never have been achieved successfully!!
-Councillor Tom Jackson
==========================================================================
Since July 2024, Wesroc Construction Limited has been working on Concession Street and Mountain Brow Boulevard from Oakcrest Drive to Upper Gage Avenue. Infrastructure upgrades totalling $7.5 million include road re-construction, sidewalk improvements, multi-use pathway installation, watermain replacement, conversion of Billy Foley Parkette parking into a layby parking, installation of black ornamental fencing and street furniture, and new traffic signals. Ward 6 constituents recall I made a commitment that if re-elected I would enthusiastically proceed with Phase 2 of this project, building on the enormous popularity of Phase 1 that spanned from Oakcrest Drive to Mohawk Road East and that has been open and well enjoyed for seven years. Also, a flashing pedestrian crossing is approved for Mountain Brow Boulevard and Rendell Boulevard similar to the ones at Mountain Brow Boulevard and Nova Drive and Mountain Brow Drive and Ellsworth Drive. Please note that lane restrictions continue on Mountain Brow Boulevard between Upper Ottawa Street and Oakcrest Drive while local access will be maintained. Mountain Brow Boulevard and Concession Street will be closed between Upper Ottawa Street and Upper Gage Avenue while local access will be maintained. The multiuse path will be closed. I thank the very active East Mountain Citizensβ Committee and the Mountain Brow Boulevard Reconstruction Citizensβ Committee for their time over many years that helped build the immensely popular and highly used Phase 1 component and their desire to replicate that enormously successful project with Phase 2. I am extremely proud of the legacy projects along Mountain Brow Boulevard and Concession Street that enhance our beloved East Mountain Community. In addition, I want to express how and why the reconfiguration of the Kenilworth Circle came about with the new signalization. In the last five years, there were 37 accidents at the top of the Kenilworth Circle, several resulting in vehicles on front lawns. Accordingly, this form of traffic calming is in consideration of the new multiuse pathway on the south side of Mountain Brow Boulevard. I have heard from constituents about the significant changes at the Kenilworth Circle and I can assure you that I have driven in the area at different times of the day, and in all directions, to better understand traffic impacts. I continue to work with City Engineering and Traffic Operations staff to make pavement markings bolder and brighter, install additional signage, and review traffic light timing.
